What is Rayonnale?
A sociocultural project focused on communities and places
The name 'Rayonnale' is a play on the Russian word rayon, meaning a district or neighbourhood, and biennale, an international art exhibition held every two years. This name reflects the idea of seeing a place through the lens of art — discovering its character, reimagining its spaces, and bringing its community together.
Rayonnale is a format for cultural and community projects that explore the relationship between places, people, and the built environment through art, education, and collective action.

The three key areas of focus in every festival are the physical environment, social connections, and the unique identity of a place.

Rayonnale events bring together local residents and creative professionals, creating opportunities for connection and collaboration. Since 2018, the project has been developed by an interdisciplinary team of cultural managers, architects, educators, and curators.

Rayonnale takes place in a variety of settings, from urban neighbourhoods to small towns and rural communities. Each event has its own focus and format, shaped by the specific needs and aspirations of the local community. Every festival is unique.
We believe Rayonnale can be a starting point for long-term programmes that transform places through cultural and educational practices.
What can Rayonnale help achieve?
  • Strengthening communities by building connections among residents and local organisations and fostering collaboration between different stakeholders.
  • Transforming public spaces by creating new community hubs and improving the built environment through tactical urbanism.
  • Exploring local identity through artistic, documentary, research-based, educational, and other creative practices.
  • Empowering young people through hands-on learning experiences that enable them to make tangible changes to their surroundings.
Rayonnale is an open-source festival format built around the principles and methods of participatory design and tactical urbanism. Local residents help shape the festival programme, while experts from different fields act as curators and facilitators.

The project modules:
LEARNING
ART
Research
EVENT
The combination of modules and their content is tailored to the specific goals of each project and the needs of the local community.

The project usually culminates in an open event for the local community. Preparing for it gives residents an opportunity to work together, build connections, and share a collective experience.

Rayonnale becomes a public platform for presenting the outcomes of all project modules. Over time, the festival’s interdisciplinary organising team can become a driving force for the local community.
